I. Briefing

Battlewords is like the classic naval war game Battleship except with words instead of ships and a scoring system that encourages guessing at the words before all of the letters have been found.

The 12 x 12 grid hides two four-letter words, two five-letter words, and two six-letter words. The radar screen in the top right corner shows the locations of the last letters of these six words. The words are separate; they do not share any letters, and go top-down and left-right, not diagonally (see Intel #1).

II. Objective

The goal is to discover the words on the grid without having to see all the letters (in other words, guessing the words with one or more letters still hidden.) By doing so, you accumulate extra points and a higher score. This version of Battlewords is a game of strategy, not speed.

Successful guessing is the only way to get extra points and a high score.

Good Score: 34-37

Great Score: 38-41

Fantastic Score: 42+

III. Procedure

1. Click on a grid square based on the location of pulses on the radar screen (which mark the last letters of words). A blue square will change to a black square if the square is empty; otherwise, a letter will appear (see Intel #2).

2. Using the pulses on the radar screen, try to "block off" words by finding the first and last letters, so that you can better guess at the words (see Intel #3).

3. After uncovering a letter, you can guess at a word by typing your guess into the rectangular box next to "OK" (see Intel #4). You must click and find another letter before typing another guess.

4. When you make a correct guess, the word; its basic point value (1 letter = 1 point); extra points for letters that were hidden when guessing; and overall score, all show in the lower right (see Intel #5).
